Abhijith used to be a seafarer. But now he is just curious. He doesn’t really know what he is.  He works with a ship management company based out of Mumbai. The company manages oil product tankers. And he manages Safety. He is loathe to use the word safety because it is a word that is nebulous in its definition and is something everyone has a construct of their own. But most importantly because safety is equated to paperwork. And how do you manage something nebulous? So he wears his designation lightly.  His curiosity took him to Luund where he completed a MSc I. human factors and safety science. And since then he has got even more confused about safety that he wants to really stop talking about it.  If he had a magic wand, he says he would would sprinkle human factors fairy dust around the maritime industry and while he is at it, some here in India too.

In a recent YouTube conversation with Mark Alston from Investigations Differently we discussed how the 'Investigations Differently' approach shifts the paradigm by treating incidents as learning events rather than just isolated occurrences. Mark discussed the structured process he's developed for event learning assessment, where incidents are evaluated based on their criticality, potential for learning, and scope of impact. Instead of merely investigating the incident, the focus shifts to learning about the task/work involved and identifying underlying systemic risks.
